Dear Readers

Dear Readers, my name is Ryan Ross and i have been on this planet for 22 years. I have done more than a normal person has in his life time. I graduated high school in Kingman, Arizona almost a year early. Then i decided to join the military to serve my country. I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan for nearly three years then was transfered over to Oak Harbor, Washington. In those short three years i have been all over Asia and had the opportunity to travel the world. Being so young and seeing so much in a short time has really made me grow as a person and as a friend. After being stationed in Oak Harbor for less than two months I was sent to Iraq. I was there for nearly eight months and enjoyed helping others when i was over there. After i came back to the United States i was honorably discharged and had my eyes set on going to college and being the first person in my family to do so. This is my first quarter at Everett Community College and my first quarter going to college ever. I want to help others and make a difference in this world and i know that a college education will help me along the way.
Before actually picking any of my classes I knew that I would have trouble in the English department. English was always my downfall in high school. Coming into class on the first day i knew from that moment that i would have help along the way in English98. From seminars to group sessions everyone was inputing there thoughts into my writing assignments and that was a major boost of confidence in my writing skills. Throughout this quarter I have learned how to bring my sentence structures together, build up my punctuation and grammar. I also learned how to summarize and paraphrase other peoples work.
During our nine weeks of class so far we have read two books. Both were very interesting and I enjoyed both books, one book more than the other. The first book we read was Three Cups of Tea and it was really hard to sit down and read because there was so much going on during the whole book i was lost but in the end it help me understand education and other countries that didn't have it. The other book was The Absolute True Diary of A Part Time Indian and this book had my attention from front to back. The way it was written was really easy to read and I learned alot about the Spokane Indians.
So my time in English 98 is almost over but i surely will not forget it. I have learned so much about reading and writing that now i have the skills to advance in my future English classes. I think i have came a long way since that first day in class where i was scared about the class to actually enjoying going to class and learning more. Knowledge is endless and I am now on the path to further that knowledge.

Intro to A War That Is Never Ending

This is my Third major essay that I wrote. I had alot of insight on what is actually going on in the war and why we are over there. I decided to put this essay in my portfolio not just because it was one I did good on but one i have lived.

A War That Is Never Ending

The war in Iraq is on the news every day and has been for the past 7-9 years. Even though the war actually started on March 20th, 2003. We as Americans have been fighting the war much longer than that. We have been over in Iraq for nearly 20 years. The war in Iraq started by trying to find weapons of mass destruction and even after we have found no weapons of that sort, we are still there and Americans are wondering why.

The United States Of America has been on the ground in Iraq since the Gulf Slaughter in 1991. ( Serendipity.li/iraqwar.htm 1 ) So actually we as a country have been fighting in Iraq for almost 19 years and every one of them has brought a little more peace to the country. Why is it taking the U.S. so long to end the war and pull our troops out? Well as seen on the news there are many problems still to face in Iraq. From the election attempts, suicide bombers and terrorist that are still in Iraq and causing problems.

As for our men and women that are serving overseas and are giving there lives for our freedom and their country, it is there choice to join the military. As Americans across the country are having protest to pull our troops out of Iraq we are still there and there is an explanation for it. The country still needs the help of The United States and other countries. As a service member joining the military in the time of war, we joined knowingly having to take a chance of going over to the war in Iraq. It is their choice and no one else's to join and they are making a difference over in Iraq.

The war in Iraq has taken many lives and have wounded countless others. Since 2003, the United States of America has lost 4,287 brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. (Globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_casualties.htm) For a war that is deemed unnecessary and a wrong path for our country to take, has taken lives but has saved thousands others. Our troops over there are saving lives and giving freedom to the people who haven't had that choice. Freedom is something that we take for granted but is luxury for other countries that do not have it. Speculations are that the United States first started the war to gain access to the oil pipe lines there in Iraq.(Proquest-Digital National Security Archive) If that was the case shouldn't our gas prices be dropping right now instead of increasing?

The number of troops that are pulling out of Iraq have increased in the past year. Troops will be over there for years to come and as they should be. In 2003 the United States had over two hundred thousand troops in Iraq and now there are ninety five thousand. (Usliberals.about.com) There are many service members all over the world and are their to help out the countries and to strategically place our troops around the world in case of a break out in war. The United States is ready and prepared for war and will do so for a long time.

War is inevitable and will be so for years and years to come. Our country is like a police force helping out the world and countries that cannot provide that type of security. We are still a young country and are learning from some of the mistakes in the past but will always be there for countries that need our help. We will never give in to terrorist and the acts they do around the world. Our country has a past with wars and unfortunately our future will endure the same fate as our past. The war in Iraq will end when the country can defend itself and give freedom and opportunities to its people. That time is regrettably not at this point but hopefully soon.

Intro to Determination

This was by far the best essay that I have written in this English class. I had a lot of heart that I put into it. Everything from the fist paragraph to the last has deep compassion in every word that I wrote. Everyone has determination in them, it's just how we use it, that people look upon.

Determination

Each person has determination in them and is surrounded by it anywhere we look. Being determined is having a goal and going for it no matter what it takes. Having to step forward in life is a task all in itself and knowing what it is we have to do to get where were going. Anywhere and everywhere in history is determination and dedication. Knowing what has to be done and going for it no matter what is determination and is a major key into becoming successful and in the end being happy.

In life there are always difficult choices to be made and different paths to be followed and the only one that can follow the path and make the choices is the one that has the determination to do so and many famous writers have said a determination quote in there lifetime. " We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history". (Sonia Johnson) We all have to make decision and depending on the determination we can accomplish anything we set our minds and hearts to.

Determination is something that everyone has in them. It's just the way we can act upon a given task to make us or break us and determination is a major factor of it all. In such circumstances we use determination to follow our dreams. There are many people in this world that are paralyzed and with determination can conquer anything from learning how to drive, getting around and in some cases being top competitors of the sports wold. Being determined gives us the heart and soul to do anything we put our minds to.

There are many people in this world that use there determination to become well known and to accomplish there tasks that they put forward. One of these famous people we all know and should know. Albert Einstein is a well know inventor of the light bulb and determining why the sky was blue. He had the determination after failing countless times over on the invention of the light bulb. But still pushed forward and accomplished what he put his mind to. Albert Einstein has countless inventions and without determination he would have never completed them.

In almost every book a person reads he or she can find determination in it everywhere everywhere. In "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson, he shows countless times again his determination to help the less fortunate. " Mortenson couldn't imagine ever discharging the debt he felt to his host in Korphe. But he was determined to try." (Mortenson pg.30) Every time Greg Mortenson has a task that he puts into motion he has the determination to make sure he completes it. In the case of his book he is determined to help the villagers. Reading this book really puts the word "Determination" into a less broad view and into a more defining meaning.
From every day to day activity to the most challenging task we make for our selves we are determined to finish it. This is a great way to build character and makes anyone a better person for at least trying a task. Being determined is not only to succeed but it is also failure. Even if we try our hardest and sometimes we don't succeed in our task but our determination was there. Like when we try to hit a ball and fail and fail but we try our hardest and try to hit the ball because we are determined to. But we all have little push to fail but when it happens there is always another way to make it better. Using determination to find another way to succeed.

We all have determination, its just how we use it that will better ourselves. In books, movies, war, life and everywhere we look we can find not just the word of determination in us but the act of doing it really shows us that we have it. Having the determination really helped me get through essays and ever day tasks that I put in front of me. Stepping forward in my life has made me a happier human being. The determination and success are all linked and without this wonderful meaning of a word and I wouldn't be where I am today.

Intro to Slumdog

This Essay was done in my DevEd class but I really enjoyed wrighting it so much that i wanted to put it in my portfolio. This essay was about the movie Slumdog Millionaire and I had to find two different habits from the book "7 Habits of Highly effective Learning". Hope you enjoy this essay.

Slumdog Millionaire

In the slums of India there were two brothers who did everything together and they lost there mom during a riot. They had to scrounge for food and shelter. Coming from nothing, Jamal which is the younger brother, was put on a game show to win twenty million Rupees. Eyes of speculation are put on Jamal when he starts answering all of the questions with the right answers. Coming from the slums Jamal was brought up with nothing and the knowledge he gained was gained on the streets. The police arrest Jamal, thinking that he must be cheating because he really isn't there for the money. Jamal tells the police his story of how he grew up and how every question that he answered so far was a part of his life in some way. During this whole story, Jamal has one true love that he has always loved. Her name is Latika and his true passion lies with her. He loses her throughout the movie and doesn't stop looking for her until he finds her, which thankfully he does by being on the game show. Jamal and his brother face many difficult tasks and challenges throughout there whole life and it is shown throughout the whole movie.

To begin with the end in mind is basically to have visually experienced deep moments and values in your life and "to establish a brief contact with your inner guidance system at the heart of your Circle of Influence". (pg.97) In the center of everyones mind and body is security, wisdom, power and guidance. We also have alternative centers and we necessarily don't actually have to follow the path of the four steps of security, power, wisdom and guidance but to follow our own path that we make for ourselves.

Habit three is when you put first things first. Personal management is one major part of this habit. "Habit three is the personal fruit, the practical fulfillment of habits one and two".(pg.146)
Time management is a major key factor in this habit. By putting your main goals and responsibilities first and having a head on your shoulders to follow those goals. You also have to know what it takes to say no and how to push forward.

During this whole movie Habit one is shown in great lengths. Jamal is having to travel and basically beg for food his whole life. He is visually living the nightmares of some people and he is gaining security, wisdom, power and guidance. Throughout Jamal's whole life he had many road blocks and his wisdom grew more and more every day. He had personal security inside him and in his own mind he had power and guidance which allowed him to follow his path to greatness.

Jamal had to make difficult choices his whole life and during this time he had to know when to say no and he had what it took to do so. No matter what happened in his path to find Latika he would always push forward and never give up on finding her. He had goals and task he wanted to finish but his more important goals came before all the rest which really is shown in Habit three. Jamal had a good head on his shoulders and he will never give into his road block but he would take what he learned and make it past all of them.

In this movie Jamal had to face his older brother after his brother took the love of his life and pretty much sold her to a powerful gangster which he also worked for. Jamal had to put himself into danger to save her. Even though family is a strong bond his love for Latika was more and he had many road blocks to get to her but yet in the face of defeat Jamal pushed forward and overcame those road blocks.

I really admired Jamal and how he was faced with all of these task and challenges and his struggles in life but some how managed to over come them and push forward and show true character of a man that had goals and would never stop until he reached them. Jamal had true heart and soul and he personified the true nature of a man with one thing on his mind. To find his one true love, Latika.

The Conclusion

So English 98 is coming to an end. This class has taught me a lot about wrighting and what to do and not to do when wrighting essay's. Everything that was in my portfolio were essays and wrighting assignments that when I first started were average and when finished them, they were two hundred times better then the first draft. So this class maybe coming to and end but the new beginning starts with the next English class I take.
